By this point in the summer you have surrendered yourself to the local theaters because the hits just keep on coming. The second half of the season doesn’t have as many blockbusters but still some solid contenders.
Despicable Me 2: Another “kids” movie that can entertain all and they added Al Pacino to voice a character!! Can. Not. Wait.
Lone Ranger – I’m sure my father will be seeing this because he is a sucker for westerns. Johnny Depp is playing the role of Tonto which was made famous by Jay Silverheels in the 50s. The potential breakout star is Armie Hammer (yes that’s really his name) as the Lone Ranger.
The Wolverine – Hugh Jackman is back in the role he was born to play. As an X-Men fan since childhood, this one is a no-brainer.
2 Guns – Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg play a DEA Agent and Naval Intelligence Officer who while investigating each other for corruption find out they have both been set up by the mob. I am here for alllll of this! And if you macho men still aren’t convinced, Paula Patton is in it too.
300: Rise of an Empire – We are back to battle Xerxes once more, this time the charge is led by Greek general Themistocles played by Sullivan Stapleton. It’s been shot in the same visual style as its predecessor, so expect lots of rippling man muscles. I know Gerard Butler died in the last one, but I think fans will show Stapleton some love. Sounds like a great date night to me.
Elysium – Back to space we go, this time with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. The human race has reached another level of segregation; the haves live on an uber-luxurious space station, while the have-nots live on a ravaged planet Earth. Damon’s character is the man who could change all of that.
Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain – Kevin Hart’s star just keeps rising and new and old fans are going to spend their holiday weekend laughing at his pain. Alright alright alriiiiiiiight.
We’re the Millers – Jason Sudekis plays a pot dealer who becomes dangerously indebted to his supplier. He enlists the help of his neighbors including Jennifer Aniston and Emma Roberts to play his fake family, so he can take his stash across the border to Mexico. Sorry, I’m just anti-Aniston (with the exception of Derailed)
Kick-Ass 2 – The original was perceived by many critics to be a flop but found a cult following after it left theaters *raises hand*. I think fans are going to help convince critics the second time around but executives wanted to make sure so Jim Carrey, John Leguizamo and Donald Faison have been added to the cast.
Pacific Rim – I really have no idea how this movie will be received, it’s Iron Man meets War of the Worlds which means there is plenty potential for awesome or snoozedom. Mankind has to battle aliens that come out from underneath the ocean. But Idris Elba is in it so…I may see it just for him.
Girl Most Likely – Kristen Wiig plays a woman who fakes a suicide attempt to win back her boyfriend, except her plan backfires and she ends up in the custody of her mother, Annette Benning. This movie is probably good, but I get a more indie vibe and summer is not the season for Indies.
R.I.P.D – The acronym stands for Rest in Peace Department and Ryan Reynolds plays a murdered police officer who joins the undead force to find his killer. Ehhhhhhhh. Maybe when the trailer is released it will change my mind.
Disney’s Planes – I just hope for the sake of parents it’s better than Cars.
There you have it, I know I crammed a lot of information in and this isn’t even all of the movies coming out this summer just a (thorough) overview. Hope that you find my lists helpful as well as entertaining and I will see you at the movies.
